Objects was first conceptualized by Sharif in the 1980s, responding to the landscape of material culture in the U.A.E. which has been undergoing rapid social and economic changes since its independence in 1971. These Objects were created from consumer products sourced from local markets and stores, comprised of materials such as spoons, towels, floor mats, electronics scraps, or copper tubes and wires, as is the case for Copper 7.
In writings about his artistic process, Sharif explained that “The way that I choose materials I use includes determining the attributes of each as well a show it is used; I achieve this by creating infinite projections of all possibilities, characterized by tone, beauty, function, and role. For this reason the process is one of selection and concentration through which the effects and features of the material linger in the viewer’s mind.”
