Even as Brey experiments with form, scale, collage, and color, the works retain a profound engagement with the natural world and humanity's place in it. Pasiflora (2021) is dominated by a dark, stormy indigo against an oil-stained background, connecting Pasiflora back to the darker earth tones that predominated Brey’s earlier works.
One of his central conceptual concerns is the model of the rhizome, by which we can experience and parse multiplicities rather than reducing our experience to a set of binaries. Excavating this duality, while the structure of Pasiflora is organic and asymmetrical, two side-by-side surges of indigo anchor the composition. Further, this use of indigo pigment creates the impression of a watery environment that is juxtaposed against delicate plant forms rendered in pencil and pastel and given depth and dynamicity by the dark concentrations of pigment within each mass, pulling the work back to earthy references.Exhibitions
