Evolving from studies of her sculptures, Al-Hadid’s works on paper emphasize bold gesture and movement. The artist draws inspiration from the histories of various civilizations, as well as those of the materials she uses to create paintings like Untitled (2021). Mining a variety of sources ranging from the Western canon to the highly stylized forms of the Islamic Golden Age, the artist’s pieces allude to cross cultural exchanges. Their frenzied mark-making simultaneously suggests collapse and coalescence, occupying the liminal space between ruin and creation.
