Featuring a section of broken chain and dynamic steel planes of highly polished, brushed stainless steel, the work recalls earlier public sculptures, including Southern Sunrise (1983) and Breaking of the Chains (1995). Edwards's interest in chains stems primarily from aesthetic concerns that link the form's historical and symbolic meanings. As he reflects, “Many people jump to the notion that the primary reference is slavery but there are many other reasons to consider using that form, or variances of that form. If a traditional blacksmith anywhere in the world forged a chain, the important thing would be did he do it well? … In other words, the meaning of the form, or the meaning of the element within a work, is affected by what the context is, what form is next to it, what form is under it or hidden by it. … I am interested in the dynamic side of sculpture more than the passive side.”3of 3
