Edwards created Luanda (1999) the same year he traveled to Luanda, Angola. There, he attended a series of conferences and met artists and thinkers like the tapestry artist Marcela Costa and writer Manuel Rui. After returning to the United States, Edwards created this sculpture as a tribute to his time in Angola and the friends he made there.
